The Blue Marlin is the best known Marlin of the Makaira, found in the Gulf Stream as far north as Long Island. It can reach 1,000 lb (454 kg) in weight. The upper jaw of the marlin extends into a long spike with which it clubs the small fish on which it feeds.
Sailfish is the common name for the game and food fish belonging to the family Istiophoridae and related to the swordfish and the marlin. It is named for its high, wide dorsal fin, colored deep blue with black spots. Like the marlin it has a pikelike upper jaw and small scales embedded in its skin. The average length is 6 ft (180 cm), though it may reach 10 ft (305 cm).
The Mahi Mahi (Dorado) is found nearly worldwide in warm waters. Its long, slender body is blue, and in the living animal there are luminous shades of gold, green, and purple. The Dorado has a dorsal fin that runs the length of the body and a forked tail. Males, larger than females, may reach a length of nearly 6 ft (1.8 m) and a weight of over 65 lb (30 kg). Dorados travel alone or in groups, attaining speeds of 35 mi (56 km) per hour.
Tuna is the largest member of the family Scombridae (Mackerel) and closely related to the Albacore and Bonito. They have streamlined bodies with two fins, and five or more finlets on the back. The body is very narrow in the tail region, and the tail is deeply forked. The most important commercially of the group is the little tuna, which averages 10 lb (4.5 kg) and is found in open Atlantic waters north to Cape Cod. The oceanic bonito, or skipjack, Katsuwonus pelamis, is a warm-water fish reaching 20 lb (9 kg) in weight. The Pacific Albacore, or long-finned Tuna, Thunnus alalunga (up to 60 lb/27 kg), is found off the Pacific coast of the United States and in the Mediterranean; its flesh is marketed as "whitemeat tuna."
The Barracuda is the slender, elongated fish of the tropical seas. Barracudas have long snouts and projecting lower jaws armed with large, sharp-edged teeth. They are ferocious, striking at anything that gleams, and are considered excellent game fishes. The largest of the group, the Great Barracuda, averages 5 ft (1.5 m) in length but may reach 10 ft (3 m); it is dangerous to swimmers wearing shiny objects.
White Marlin are large, elongated fish with a large upper jaw that forms a spear which is round in cross-section. They are dark blue to chocolate-brown in color. Although generally considered to be a rare and solitary species relative to other similar fish, white marlin occur in small groups consisting of several individuals. Average size is 45 to 65 lbs (20-30 kg), with females reaching relatively larger sizes.
Wahoo are related to the Mackerel, and are members of the fish family Scombridae. Wahoo live in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. During the summer, they may migrate into temperate waters. According to the International Game Fish Association, the official record for the largest Wahoo caught on hook and line is 158.5 lb (71.9 kg). However, uncertified reports indicate Wahoo may grow as large as 200 lb (91 kg) or more.
